Two insurers, three countries, one infrastructure

Aioi Nissay Dowa Insurance Europe · UK, Germany, Luxembourg

Situation

Two insurers were merging, with separate identity, messaging and file services, and undocumented dependencies.

What I did

  • Stabilised future constraints before migrating anything
  • Led sequenced cutovers with prepared recovery paths
  • Planned the infrastructure for the HQ move from London to Luxembourg

Result

One consolidated platform, delivered while all three countries kept operating.

Making technology performance visible

SaaS Solutions · MiH Group · CTO, then CIO

Situation

After the group integration, IT delivered the work but could not show service levels, demand or bottlenecks.

What I did

  • Built IT service management on one common platform
  • Separated Build and Run, with ownership through RACI
  • Consolidated Microsoft and AWS licensing and hardware standards

Result

Performance measured in SLA and resolution data and reported to the executive team.

Platform & economics

From a virtualised estate to an internal cloud platform

Sky Deutschland · Germany and Italy

Situation

Plenty of virtualisation, but a traditional operating model that depended on external delivery.

What I did

  • Shaped a Virtual Data Centre platform with automated provisioning and hardening by default
  • Introduced cost transparency, Infrastructure as Code and SRE practices
  • Grew the team into a platform function with its own budget and vendors

Result

An internally controlled platform the wider organisation could build on.

Background

I started in 2002 repairing hardware and spent years building and running infrastructure for telecoms, banks, insurers and government. Later I led platform teams at Sky Germany and became CTO, then CIO, of SaaS Solutions. Having operated the systems I advise on, I know what an abstraction hides and what a vendor slide leaves out.
